From today, travellers from Singapore can look forward to a new destination in China – Wenzhou (温州), a city in southeastern Zhejiang province! The thrice weekly flights are operated by Loong Air, a new airline to Changi Airport.
Loong Air started its operations in 2012 as a cargo airline, before transitioning to a passenger airline in 2013. It currently has extensive operations in China with a few international destinations, including Japan, South Korea and Thailand.
Once you arrive in Wenzhou, pay a visit to the Wenzhou Museum to immerse yourself in its rich history and culture. Featuring a collection of more than 30,000 artifacts, there is sure to be something to learn about Wenzhou. Admission is free!
Wenzhou is also known for traditional arts like Nanxi Opera, which is an early form of Chinese opera that originated in Wenzhou. You can catch a traditional opera at the Wenzhou Grand Theater, a major cultural venue in the city that hosts various opera shows and traditional performances.
This is something you definitely should include in your itinerary - a day trip to the Yandang Mountain, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes. Designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015, it offers a diverse range of activities for visitors. Hike through lush valleys, marvel at the unique rock formations, witness the awe-inspiring Dalongqiu Waterfall, explore ancient temples, and even enjoy a thrilling tightrope walker performance. Day tours are available with pickups from Wenzhou, which is about an hour’s drive away.
Wuma Street (meaning “five horses street” in Chinese) offers a mix of historical sights, shops, and must-try street food – perfect if you’re trying to tick off multiple entries on your to-do list. While you’re in the area, try the Wenzhou fish balls, rice cakes, and local glutinous rice cakes. Don't forget to grab a photo of the five horses sculpture as well!
