The refreshed Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 2 is now fully reopened! It is bigger and better, with many new amenities, attractions and shops for you to check out if you’re flying from Terminal 2 and wondering what fun things are there to do and see in T2 before your flight. The best part? It’s totally free!
The two newest digital installations to be unveiled are The Wonderfall and Dreamscape. Blurring the lines between art and technology, both installations offer a truly immersive experience and are definitely not to be missed the next time you are here.
From a four-storey tall digital waterfall to a limitless digital sky, these signature installations are sure to redefine your expectations of an airport experience. Here, we dive deeper into each installation, and the inspiration that brought these ideas to life.
The Inspiration behind it all
With Singapore being affectionately known as the garden city, Changi Airport wanted to bring the magic of nature to all passengers passing through the airport. Terminal 2’s design was heavily inspired by nature, weaving in elements of minerals, water and lush greenery in its architecture and design.
In collaboration with Moment Factory and Boiffils, these new installations connect travellers to the urban greenery that defines our city, as soon as they step into Changi Airport. You may be familiar with the two large digital screens at Terminal 4’s Immersive Wall and Heritage Zone – which are the works of Moment Factory. While for Boiffils, they’re the lead interior design company for the whole Terminal 2 revamp project.
The Wonderfall – breathtaking digital waterfall that feels like the real deal
Located at Terminal 2’s Departure Hall, The Wonderfall offers a brief respite for travellers after checking in their luggage. Situated between two thriving vertical gardens, this impressive 14-metre tall and 17-metre wide LED wall spans the height of Terminal 2’s Departure Hall. Creating this colossal LED wall required 892 individual tiles, seamlessly joined together into three large and flat segments. The curved LED screen also guarantees you a good view from any spot.
Set to instrumentals composed by Jean-Michel Blais, watch the torrents of water rush down the megalithic boulders that appear occasionally. The waterfall display dynamically responds to real-time lighting, offering a distinct visual experience during both day and night. The special four-minute show, “Rhythms of Nature”, plays at intervals throughout the day. During the mesmerising show, witness the waters reverse its course over the boulders, creating a captivating interplay among the various elements.
Keep your eyes peeled to spot some hidden easter eggs within the falls – a rainbow, butterflies, and a Kingfisher flying across this digital landscape.
Serving as the entrance to a lift lobby behind, the LED screens that line the side of the wall offer an immersive experience that feels as though you are walking right through the heart of the waterfall itself!
Did you know that there’s a centrepiece art installation at every terminal in Changi Airport? The Kinetic Rain at Terminal 1, Daisy at Terminal 3 and Petalclouds at Terminal 4 are all designed to enhance the airport experience for travellers!
Dreamscape – an immersive garden like no other
As you enter Terminal 2’s transit area, be prepared to be amazed by Dreamscape. Located at the previous Orchid Garden, the space has been transformed into an immersive garden elevated over a pond, under a limitless digital sky.
Like a skylight, this digital sky opens an overhead window to the real world. Through integration with Changi Airport’s weather system, it mimics daylight and weather conditions in real time! From sunrise to a star-filled sky, it’s a great place for you to wind down and take a few moments to yourself before catching your flight.
Look out for the special surprises in the sky such as passing planes, birds, or even a hot air balloon. Every now and then, the regular forecast switches to a thunderstorm, and the skylight turns into an underwater portal where fish, otters, and even a Sampan boat float by.
Apart from the digital sky in Terminal 2, the hanging and upstand rocks are equally impressive. These structures feature more than 20,000 plants selected from over 100 species. The lights in Dreamscape were carefully angled to light up the plants, while also creating shadows to bring out their texture and structures.
Another cool element of Dreamscape is the transparent pond. Step onto the platform and look beneath your feet – as if you are standing on water, catch the colourful cichlids and other fishes gliding through the waters below you.
The magic of Dreamscape is in how all the elements come together. The combination of the digital sky, foliage and fish pond, provides an immersive experience for all passing through Changi Airport’s T2.
