Located in the west, the Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre is a sprawling 600-shop complex selling fruits, vegetables, dried goods, fish and seafood. Over 40% of Singapore’s produce goes through here, so the marketplace runs 24/7, with its busiest hours being between 12 – 6AM! Wholesalers such as local market store owners and other food and beverage business owners purchase their fresh food here before setting up for the day. So, the next time you’re running out of ingredients and have time to spare in the middle of the night, consider your grocery run an exciting outdoor activity and tag a friend along! 

Visitors can get their hands on produce that goes into Singapore’s famed cuisine, from popular hawkers to glitzy restaurants. Trolleys filled with boxes upon boxes bustle around constantly, so don’t be surprised to see stocks cleared as early as two in the morning!

There's even an auction house, where the freshest fruit and vegetable imports are put up for bidding! 

The Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre is one of the best places that demonstrate Singapore’s authenticity and local culture. For an activity that’s more hands-on, you can try prawning this weekend, a beloved pastime among locals. Reel in tiger head prawns, crayfish or more challenging catches like barramundi at ORTO. This nature resort is open all day, and is conveniently located beside Khatib MRT station.

Whatever you catch can be grilled on the spot or you can see how the pros do it at the beer gardens and restaurants in the park. Wondering if prawning is a suitable activity to do with kids? Perched atop Woodlands Community Centre, this observatory is run by and designed with input from residents and local astronomy enthusiasts. Rain or shine, this indoor activity is perfect for families of all sizes, couples, and those going solo!

On clear nights, the 30cm telescope displays the moon, nearby planets and constellations in all their glory. This weekend or next, guided tours here change depending on astronomical events, so there’s something new on every visit. Seminars on the nature of the universe are hosted here too — not something you’d expect to see in the heartlands!
