You have probably visited Bangkok, Thailand, a popular weekend destination known for its vibrant shopping scene, flavourful food and rich cultural heritage. But did you know that just three hours away from Bangkok, you can find endless flower fields, majestic mountain views and architecture reminiscent of European streets?
A family-friendly destination with something for everyone - here’s a 4D3N itinerary for a relaxing and idyllic escape to Khao Yai, where you might just forget that you’re even in Thailand.
Day 1: The Journey from Bangkok to Khao Yai
Morning. Fly into Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport and pick up your rental vehicle. It is recommended to pick an earlier flight so that you can arrive in Khao Yai before sunset.
From the airport, it is an easy 3-hour drive up to Khao Yai. You can expect to pay toll fees twice on Highway 1, at a rate of 30 baht (~S$1.20) per toll for 4-wheeled vehicles. In my experience,
Google Maps is highly accurate and will also alert you to road works along the way.
For those who prefer not to drive, you may choose to hire a driver who will pick you up from the airport and bring you around Khao Yai during your stay!
Afternoon. Check into your hotel and drop off your bags before heading to PB Khao Yai Winery. Tours can be booked in advance or on site, and each tour lasts around 70 minutes. The experience begins with a guided visit to the wine factory, where you will learn about the winemaking process. The tour includes a wine tasting session featuring three varieties—red, white, and rosé. The wine is produced from grape varieties more suited for the warmer climate, such as Shiraz, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. For non-drinkers, grape juice is available as an alternative. The tour concludes with a visit to the vineyard, where you can opt to pick grapes for a small additional fee.

Day 2: An Adventure into the Mountains
Morning. After a delicious breakfast at the hotel, make your way to Khao Yai National Park. Most of the sites within the park are easily accessible by car. For those seeking adventure, explore one of seven nature trails with varying levels of difficulty. Wildlife enthusiasts should keep their eyes peeled along the way - you might even be lucky enough to spot elephants!
We attempted Trail 2 which begins at the Pha Kluai Mai Campground and ends at Haew Suwat Waterfall. The 3km trail took me about 2 hours to complete, passing through a bamboo forest and following along a stream to the Pha Kluay Mai Waterfall before reaching the end point. The trail is not for the faint-hearted, with fallen trees along the way that might be a challenge to manoeuvre past for some. Some parts of the trail are also quite narrow and close to the fast-moving stream. Don’t forget to wear good trekking shoes and long pants to avoid being scratched by the surrounding foliage.
If you are planning to visit the National Park, avoid the months of June to September as certain trails and viewpoints will be closed during the rainy season.
