Changi Airport Terminal 2, which fully reopened on 1 November 2023 after a three-and-a-half-year upgrade, has won the Special prize for an Interior at the Prix Versailles World Architecture and Design Award 2024. 

Outstanding architecture projects in the categories of Airports, Campuses, Passenger Stations, Sports, Museums, Emporiums, Hotels and Restaurants were recognised with world titles at the UNESCO Headquarters on 2 December 2024. The prestigious award honours the finest works in architecture and design worldwide.

A bird’s eye view of the Changi Airport Terminal 2 Departure Hall showcases the iconic carpet design that mimics the topography of sea and earth.

The refreshed Terminal 2 in Changi Airport is a nature-inspired oasis that awaits travellers and visitors. From the moment you step into the Departure Hall, you are greeted by lush green columns brimming with a wide variety of plants. As you journey through the terminal, you will notice intricate carpet patterns that mimic the topography of the sea and earth viewed from the sky, creating a soothing and immersive atmosphere. It is as if you’ve been transported to a tranquil resort, offering a refreshing escape from the stress that is often associated with air travel.

The new digital installations in Changi Airport Terminal 2 have captivated the imagination of countless visitors and travellers. The Wonderfall, a breathtaking 14-metre tall and 17-metre wide digital waterfall at the heart of the Departure Hall, has become a popular spot for photos and a moment of respite for travellers before departing to their next destination. The mesmerising display features a four-minute show, “Rhythms of Nature”, which plays every 30 minutes.

In the transit area, countless travellers have been awestruck by Dreamscape, an immersive garden with a digital sky that mimics daylight and weather conditions in real-time.

Other highlights in the refreshed terminal include the Gourmet Garden, a unique dining experience in the transit area, where luscious foliage drapes overhead. Visitors can also enjoy the interactive Flap Pix exhibit, which uses split-flaps from the iconic flight information display boards previously used in Terminal 2 to create personalised artwork. And for those with a bit of a shopping itch, new-to-Changi brands offer a chance to stock up on local souvenirs, beauty products, and more at Goods & Services Tax-absorbed prices before your next flight.

Architectural gems awarded by Prix Versailles

Zayed International Airport (Abu Dhabi) and Suvarnabhumi Airport, Midfield Satellite 1 (Bangkok), are also recognised at Prix Versailles 2024 for the Prix Versailles prize and Special prize for an Exterior, respectively. Other most beautiful airports in the world for 2024, according to Prix Versailles, include Felipe Ángeles International Airport (Zumpango), Logan International Airport, Terminal E (Boston), and Kansas City International Airport (Kansas City).

Additionally, other Singapore locations that have previously received a world title from the Prix Versailles include Apple Store (Marina Bay Sands), Apple Store (Orchard Road), and Jewel Changi Airport.

Globally, Changi Airport Terminal 2 also won the Popular Choice Winner award in the Transport Interiors category of the 12th Annual Architizer A+Awards, which celebrates the world’s best architecture and the teams that bring it to life. In Singapore, the refreshed Changi Airport Terminal 2 has also been recognised with the BCA Universal Design Excellence Award for its user-friendly design and the BCA Green Mark Platinum for its commitment to sustainability and environmental performance.
