Singapore might be a fast-moving city, but on weekends, take the opportunity to slow down and go on unique explorations or take fascinating classes. You might view the Little Red Dot in a different light!
1. Find out where your fresh seafood comes from
Meet the fishermen, fish mongers and others people responsible for bringing the seafood you eat to your table as you go on the early morning tour of the Jurong Fishery Port. Organised by Hai Sia Seafood, you can immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of this fast-paced but little-known aspect of Singapore’s food industry. Here, you get to admire the fresh catch and even witness lively price negotiations. The guide will also offer tips on how to select the best seafood, so you’re better equipped the next time you head to the market.
2. Explore Singapore’s first marine park
Did you know Singapore’s waters are home to more than 250 species of hard corals and over 100 species of reef fish? Sign up for National Parks Board’s (NParks) guided tour of Sisters’ Islands to learn more about the rich biodiversity at Singapore’s first marine park. While you’re at it, you might just catch a glimpse of some seahorses, or other similarly cute and rare creatures.
Adventurous explorers with the necessary dive experience and qualifications can also explore the two dive trails located here. The trails showcase an array of reefs, with stations where divers may participate in simple NParks’ Citizen Science programmes along the way.
3. Learn to be a mermaid
If you can’t get enough of the aquatic world, going to mermaid school is the perfect excuse to spend more time in the water. Sign up for mermaid classes at the Singapore Mermaid School, where you’ll learn how to swim like this mythical underwater creature – complete with a shimmery, prosthetic tail. The classes are not just for whimsical fun; you can expect to give your core muscles a solid workout as you frolic in the water. Classes also start with a short and informative session about mermaid myths and legends, so you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for this unique activity as you bond with other members of your ‘pod’.

4. Help keep an ancient art alive
Immerse yourself in the increasingly rare art of Chinese opera by taking a hands-on workshop on opera makeup. You will learn the secrets of dramatic Teochew opera makeup techniques at this makeup course conducted by a professional opera makeup artist with over three decades of experience. Not only is this a quirky form of face painting to discover, you’ll also be doing your part to keep this ancient art form alive. As a bonus, you’ll be able to take plenty of interesting photographs to post on Instagram to show others how creative your weekend escapades are!
Whether you’re interested in learning a new skill or discovering a lesser-known aspect of Singapore, these unique activities are a great way to spend your free time. What other uncommon weekend pursuits have you discovered on our sunny isle?

6. Challenge your fears and conquer heights – Bungy Jump
First, take in the sea breeze and views of the beach below, then take a deep breath and leap 47 metres into the air! Located on Singapore’s “island of fun” Sentosa, AJ Hackett Sentosa has the first and only Bungy Jump in the country. For the slightly less adventurous, consider The Vertical Skywalk, where you can experience the same thrill walking 44 metres face down from the top of the tower. As they say at AJ Hackett, live your life fearlessly!
7. Sign up for a Sunday evening sail – DBS Sailing At The Bay
Take in the views of the Singapore skyline from one of the most unique vantages in Singapore – on a gorgeous sailboat in the middle of the Marina Bay, overlooking the Singapore skyline. Homegrown bank DBS made it its mission to liven up the Marine Bay by introducing DBS Sailing At The Bay. Through its fleet of four sailboats, guests will get to enjoy a complimentary 40-minute joy ride around the Marina Reservoir on the weekends. It’s an extremely popular activity, so sign up online early as slots tend to fill up quickly!
8. Take up a pottery course at Singapore’s last functioning dragon kiln – Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle
Ever heard of a dragon kiln? Built in the 1940s, the Dragon Kiln at Thow Kwang is one of the oldest surviving brick-built kilns in Singapore for wood-firing. Give pottery a go at one of their 2-hour pottery workshops (prices start at $28). The kiln is the perfect place to escape Singapore’s hustle and bustle while creating something with your own two hands. For the adventurous, the kiln also offers a combined pottery and archery workshop for a different kind of weekend. As the workshops do not run every weekend, we recommend booking a place online before heading down to the kiln!
